How a sip of soda affects your health

Check it out… how a sip… A SIP mind you… of soda can impact your health.

Question for everyone sharing and reblogging this image:


I mean look at it… it literally does say at the top “a sip”. It’s not “chronic excess of calories sourced from nutritionally sparse beverages” which I’ll concede would be a good way to end up overweight and probably unhealthy.

But a sip? For christ sake lets pretend to be reasonable, logical & intelligent human beings for a minute here.

With an inactive lifestyle, sodas (soft drinks as we call them here) are a good way to increase your likelyhood of exceeding your energy requirements. Also they provide (literally? I’d have to double check) no nutritional value other than pure energy… which, again… if that’s energy in excess of your requirements, that’s not good.

Now with a more active lifestyle meaning higher energy requirements, is there any reason you couldn’t fit a can of soda into your intake if you really wanted it? You’d want to make sure you were meeting your protein, fibre and micronutrient requirements from other sources, since you sure as hell aren’t getting them here… but assuming that’s covered, and you’re confident that you’re on track for over all appropriate total energy intake… how could there be any harm?

It is only by regularly consuming amounts vastly in excess of your energy requirements while neglecting other requirements that any food or beverage choice can truly be detrimental to your health… other than in specific cases of allergy or intolerance, of course.

You’re certainly not going to do a damn thing with “a sip”. Not to mention that this is all false science anyway. We know that sugar is not addictive, but still they’re pushing that barrow. The thing about “insulin causes your liver to turn sugar into fat” is just… GOD I just can’t even anymore.  Everyone go and read this excellent series of articles about insulin OR SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT IT. Or both.

This fucking bullshit has got to stop. The idea that a single serve…. much less a mere “sip” of something is going to have adverse health effects is extreme orthorexia. I see these pro-orthorexia type posts as literally no better, no different than blog posts promoting and glamourising other eating disorders. If you wouldn’t run a pro-ana or pro-mia blog, don’t fucking post garbage like this either.

The SCUMBAGS who make money fear mongering like this need to be kicked hard in the balls. By me.
